Seven Churches in South Oxfordshire

From the Rector: Sunday 24th March 2019

Dear friends,

A warm welcome to our service on this, the third Sunday of Lent. Do make the most of the opportunity to share and learn at our Team wide Lent groups, as advertised inside.

I wonder if you are able to remember the third commandment? Or how about the sixth? Or the ninth? Why not test yourself before looking at the text below?

Next Sunday is Mothering Sunday, and there will be special services at all of the Team Churches at the usual times. Guests are particularly welcome as we celebrate and give thanks to God for our mothers, asking Him to bless them and remembering all that they gave to us.

We remember too in prayer the families of those killed over the last few weeks, firstly in the plane crash in Ethiopia and also in the attacks on the Muslim community in Christchurch, New Zealand. Both unnecessary losses of life, whether caused through human negligence or human wickedness. Both acts of violence whose impact was catastrophically magnified through the agency of modern technology. “Holy Lord, have mercy on us all, Lord have mercy on us.”

The Ten Commandments

The form below is suitable for memorisation. If you would like to read the “full” text, the reference is Exodus 20:1-17.

I am the Lord your God; you shall have no other gods but me.
You shall not make for yourself any idol,
whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above,
or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
You shall not bow down to them or worship them.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy.
For six days you shall labour and do all your work.
But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.
Honour your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness.
You shall not covet.
