Dear friends,
A very warm welcome to this service of Remembrance, as we give thanks for those who gave their lives for our freedom, particularly celebrating the centenary of the end of the First World War. A particular welcome if you are joining us at church for the first time. Let us pray that the spirit of peace would continue to touch and bless us, and that the sacrifice of a whole generation of young men will never ever be required again. The Church of England has offered a specially written prayer for Peace, which is reproduced below.
Eternal God,
from whom all thoughts of truth and peace proceed:
kindle, we pray, in the hearts of all, the true love of peace
and guide with your pure and peaceable wisdom
those who take counsel for the nations of the earth
that in tranquillity your kingdom may go forward,
till the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
